A Whimsical 80th Birthday Party in Dorset

This summer, Peapod & Co. had the great pleasure of catering a whimsical 80th birthday party in the stunning Dorset countryside, where 290 guests gathered under an elegant marquee in a private garden. We were honoured to be selected by renowned party planner William Bartholomew to bring this spectacular milestone celebration to life.

Green, the colour of the moment, and seasonal blooms set the event theme. The setting featured romantic sweet peas, natural textures, and tables named after flowers — Sweet Pea, Lily of the Valley, Carnation, and more. The colour scheme created a soft, floral-inspired atmosphere.

Our team wore floral crowns, adding to the charm of the day, while maypole dancing brought a nostalgic and joyful spirit to the garden. Guests were entertained throughout the day by live saxophone and drums, a brilliant comedy set by Jon Culshaw, and a captivating performance from opera legend Sir Bryn Terfel. The celebration flowed effortlessly from day into night.

We were proud to serve both lunch and dinner, helping to create an elegant garden party full of colour and creativity.

The Lunch Party

Guests were welcomed with chilled Champagne and a selection of canapés. The client selected a seasonal menu for lunch.

To start, guests were served gazpacho, accompanied by bowls of crispy onions, chopped egg white, red onion, and brioche croutons. Rosemary focaccia with olive oil completed the course.

For the main course, guests enjoyed seared Severn & Wye salmon with a salmon coulibiac croquette, Jersey Royals, asparagus, and pea shoots, served with hollandaise sauce and a cucumber salad. A vegetarian alternative of seared butternut squash with a Manchego croquette, served with the same seasonal accompaniments, was also offered.

The cheese course followed, featuring a selection of cheeses, walnuts, grapes, and crackers. For dessert, guests enjoyed a traditional English strawberries, meringue, and Hampshire cream.

After lunch, guests relaxed with speeches and live music, accompanied by espresso martinis, tea, and coffee.

Dinner & Dancing

As evening settled in, guests returned for a second chapter of celebration. Champagne and canapés were served, including Cotswold chicken satay with dipping sauce, English new potatoes with sour cream and caviar, vegetable spring rolls with ponzu, and Severn & Wye smoked salmon on brioche with lemon cream cheese.

Dinner featured a fragrant Cotswold chicken Thai curry and a a vegetarian alternative, served with rice, poppadums, and a colourful array of condiments: mango chutney, raita, coconut, and diced onion.

For pudding, guests enjoyed chocolate brownies with cream, alongside mango and passionfruit cheesecake. A coffee station was available as dancing got underway.

Live Entertainment

Guests were treated to speeches, musical performances, theatrical moments and comedy throughout the birthday party.

William Bartholomew’s “nymphs” performed a playful maypole dance in the garden, adding a touch of theatre and nostalgia. Drummers set the rhythm during the reception, energising the early part of the celebration.

The marquee was filled with laughter during Jon Culshaw’s sharp and brilliantly observed set. Later, Sir Bryn Terfel performed ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ with characteristic power and poise, drawing quiet attention across the room.
